The BEE WISE students are building a smart beehive system where hive monitoring systems securely connect to an app, that are easy to set up and manage by the user, and can automatically open or close vents to keep bees healthy based on real-time hive temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels.
The Bee Wise project is a student-designed smart beehive system that combines sensors, software, and automation to help beekeepers better care for their hives, especially in the winter. Each hive connects securely to a mobile app where it is identified by company, yard, and hive number, making it easy to manage many hives at once. When a hive comes online for the first time, a simple onboarding process registers it and stores its information safely using password protection. The hives and the app communicate using MQTT, allowing real-time sharing of data and commands. Inside each hive, an Arduino-based controller monitors temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide and automatically opens or closes a ventilation system to keep the hive environment healthy. An AI algorithm could analyze this data to learn how to predict potential hive stress, death or health issues in the colony. This AI-driven approach not only keeps the hive environment healthy but also provides insights and alerts to beekeepers, demonstrating how advanced technology can support sustainable agriculture and bee conservation.
