To decontaminate the toxic chemicals in soil and groundwater at the Chalk River Nuclear Site we propose to use a three layer in situ bioremediation system called MicroRem.
Due to improper nuclear waste management and a meltdown Chalk River's groundwater is contaminated with toxic chemicals such as but not limited to Strontium-90, Uranium-238, and Carbon Tetrachloride. These chemicals have various impacts on the people, environment and animals that surround Chalk River. To decontaminate the area we propose to use a three layer in situ bioremediation system which consists of apatite, activated carbon and deinococcus radiodurans. We created a 3d print model, 2d drawing of the system and tested it using a simulation.
