Scoliosis Brace Tension Sensor

Scoliosis affects over 200,000 children in Canada, and the standard treatment; an orthotic brace worn up to 23 hours a day; depends entirely on consistent strap tension. Currently, there is no way to monitor this tension in real time, leaving patients and clinicians without reliable data or knowledge of treatment effectivity between appointments. SpineSense addresses this gap with a compact, strap-mounted sensor that uses strain gauges to detect brace deformation and convert it into live tension readings, transmitted via Wi-Fi to a companion app. The system also includes an onboard LED display and memory card for offline use. Our team has iterated through multiple material and hardware configurations, incorporating feedback from orthotist stakeholders and TFC mentors to refine the design.
