Project Summary

Wearable biofeedback sensors are innovative solutions which provide real-time, continuous feedback on gait characteristics to improve rehabilitation. These devices can support individuals post-neurological events which impair proprioception, which allows them to regain their independence by analyzing joint angles and gait-related motion artifacts. Providing real-time feedback can reduce reliance on rehabilitation therapists and allow users to improve their gait, balance and overall mobility.

Project Description

Gait Feedback Aid aims to include spatial trackers for monitoring at the hip, knee, shoulder and ankle joints as well as connectivity to a web application, with current focus placed on the knee joint. A sensor or system will be designed which provides auditory or visual feedback to the patient to improve gait quality and provide intrinsic learning. There will be a website or application to visualize and download the data after each rehabilitation session. The system should be usable for patients outside of professional therapy sessions for increased ambulation moments and decreased reliance on therapists. The GAIT Feedback Aid will be fully weatherproofed and shielded from the elements (dust-resistant), ensuring its durability and protection against damage for long-term use. It will be worked on by the bioelectric, biomechanical, and software design teams.
